The Burns Club of Atlanta wouldn't be here today without the vision and dedication of its founder, Dr. Joseph Jacobs. Born of German Jewish parentage, Dr. Jacobs' love for the poetry of Scotland's national bard, Robert Burns, transcended cultural boundaries. This passion led him to play a pivotal role in shaping Atlanta's cultural landscape.

In 1896, on the 100th anniversary of Burns' death, Dr. Jacobs, along with a group of fellow admirers, gathered at the Aragon Hotel. This historic meeting marked the birth of the Burns Club of Atlanta, making it one of the oldest continuously operating literary societies in the city. Dr. Jacobs assumed the mantle of the first president, guiding the nascent club through its formative years.

Beyond his leadership role, Dr. Jacobs' commitment to Burns extended far beyond the club meetings. He amassed a remarkable personal collection of Burns' works, encompassing over 734 books and manuscripts. This collection, a testament to his deep admiration for the bard, stands as a valuable resource for scholars and enthusiasts alike.

Driven by his fervent passion, Dr. Jacobs took his dedication a step further. He purchased a plot of land in Atlanta and meticulously oversaw the construction of a unique replica of Burns' birthplace cottage in Alloway, Scotland. Completed in 1911, this iconic structure, the only one of its kind outside of Scotland, became the permanent home of the Burns Club, solidifying its legacy in Atlanta.

Dr. Jacobs' contributions went beyond the Burns Club and the literary sphere. He was a prominent citizen, involved in various civic endeavors and contributing to the city's development. Notably, his pharmacy in the Five Points neighborhood holds the distinction of being the first to serve Coca-Cola to the public in 1886.

Dr. Joseph Jacobs' story is one of passion, dedication, and cultural appreciation. He not only established a vibrant literary society that continues to this day, but also left a tangible legacy in the form of the Burns Cottage, a beloved landmark for our city. We at the Burns Club of Atlanta honor his memory and remain forever grateful for the foundation he laid, allowing us to celebrate the life and works of Robert Burns for over a century.

This glimpse into Dr. Jacobs' life serves as a reminder of the individuals who, through their passion and vision, shape the very fabric of our community.
